Home help and cleaning alongside care
Cleaning in a home where someone is frail, confused or simply protective of their things is a different job. It is done more slowly, more carefully, and by somebody who knows why that matters.
Home help provides cleaning and light household support for older or disabled people in their own homes, delivered by DBS-checked staff trained to work around care needs. It can be booked on its own, alongside a Earnest Care care package, or funded through a local authority personal budget or direct payment.
Why this is a different job
A standard cleaner works fast, moves things to clean under them, and puts them back roughly where they were. In a home where someone has dementia, that is genuinely destabilising — an object moved six inches can be an object lost for the rest of the day.
In a home where someone has spent sixty years accumulating things that matter to them, a brisk clear-out is not efficiency. It is a loss. And in a home where somebody is frail and anxious, a stranger moving quickly through the rooms is frightening rather than helpful.
So our staff work differently here. Slower. Announced. Asking before moving anything. Putting things back exactly, not approximately.
What home help covers
- General cleaning — kitchen, bathroom, floors, surfaces, dusting
- Laundry, ironing and changing bedding
- Washing up and keeping the kitchen usable and safe
- Fridge checks and clearing out food that has gone off, which is genuinely important and often nobody's job
- Bins out on the right day
- Light tidying to reduce trip hazards — a leading cause of falls at home
- Shopping and putting it away
- Company while it all happens, which for a lot of our clients is the part they look forward to
What it is not: personal care. Washing, dressing, medication and mobility support are a regulated activity delivered by our care team, not by a cleaner. If a home help notices that more is needed, they tell the office and we talk to the family about it — which is how a good many care packages actually start.
Working around care needs
Around dementia
Nothing moved without asking. Nothing thrown away. Familiar layout preserved exactly, because environmental memory is doing more work than most families realise.
Around equipment
Hospital beds, hoists, commodes, oxygen. Cleaned around safely and never moved or unplugged, and our staff know why that matters.
Around anxiety
Same person, same day, same time. Announced before entering a room. No rushing, no surprises.
Alongside a care visit
Home help can run in the same slot as a care visit or on its own day, whichever works better for the household.
Noticing and reporting
Someone in the house weekly notices things families visiting monthly do not - food untouched, post unopened, new bruising. We tell you.
Fundable support
Domestic support is often included in a local authority personal budget or direct payment. We will tell you if we think you should be asking for it.
Can this be funded?
Often, and it is under-claimed. Domestic support is frequently included in a local authority care and support plan, particularly where an untidy or unsafe home is contributing to falls risk. If your relative receives a direct payment, they can usually choose to spend part of it on home help.
Attendance Allowance is not means-tested and is not restricted in what it can be spent on — a great many families use it for exactly this. Our care funding guide walks through every route.
Booking it with or without care
You do not need to be a care client. Plenty of people book home help on its own — often adult children arranging it for a parent who would flatly refuse 'carers' but is perfectly happy with 'someone who does the cleaning'.
That is, quite often, how it should start. A cleaner who turns up every Thursday and has a cup of tea becomes a trusted person. When more help is needed later, it is a conversation with someone they already like rather than a stranger at the door.
